Welcome to Midgard! Midgard is a community exclusively on darknets dedicated to building a better, simpler, and more human internet. We started off as a web host for Tor and Yggdrasil inspired by {N,G}eocities and similar, but that's not all we do. Our main attractions are the aforementioned site hosting and our IRC server, and we have more on top of that.
If you want a website here, feel free to request one after reading our guidelines for both being part of the community and making a decent website.
Reading this on clearnet? All of our actual services are on one of or a mix of Yggdrasil, Tor, or I2P, as documented on the services page for each service. We're primarily on Yggdrasil, so if you're new to all of this stuff, we recommend you try that first.
So... what happened?
As some of you may know, Midgard was supposed to be transferred to a new machine ~mid 2025. While the files have been transferred since around then, I kept getting too busy to actually bring everything back online and up to standard. Things should mostly be back now, with some changes in the service roster. Service still isn't 100% where I want it right now, but this is mostly on the backend. SELinux has yet to be fully implemented on the new main server (alcatraz.midgard) and I need to get some time to fix Gentoo's Suricata packages so that can run here too. Other than that, things should be largely the same for end users. Some things from before still do need fixing, primarily I2P.
What's new?
First off, Midgard's primary services are now driven by a much more powerful server running Gentoo instead of Alpine like the first server, but that's the boring part. Since going down, we've introduced a few new services. Among these are:
- Midgard IRC
- Midgard IRC is probably the biggest addition since the last time this site has been updated. While hosting sites remains a heavy focus of Midgard, I've decided pivoting towards being an IRC community would probably be for the best. Running on InspIRCd and Anope.
- Mumble
- Mumble is a voice chatting program. Think of it as an open source TeamSpeak. If you're too young for that, think of it as an open source Discord voice chat. We currently only host it on Yggdrasil.
- DICT
- For looking up words over the internet. No web needed.
- Terraria
- Midgard now hosts a modded Terraria server running Calamity and Thorium, as well as other mods. It's semi-private at the moment, since the tModLoader dedicated server offers very little in the way of anti-griefing measures.
- Quake 3 Arena FFA (TESTING)
- The arena shooter everyone already knows and loves. Not stable/really usable currently.
For further information on services we offer, refer to the dedicated pages.
There's something missing!
During Midgard's evolution from last time it was getting updates to now, I've decided to cut a few services I thought were no longer necessary. Among these are also some planned services that I've decided just don't fit (for now). Cut services/plans include:
- Forums
- Closed due to being dead and maintenance burden. This won't be the last you see of forum-style things on MG though...
- XMPP
- This one hurt a bit more than the others to remove, but it wasn't getting used and it was very unstable. Out of anything here, it's the one service most likely to get brought back in the future, but don't hold your breath.
- Gemini, Gopher, Nex, etc
- All removed for the same reason. Neither I nor anyone else to be involved in MG has that much interest in these, and I don't forsee them getting used much if left around. We already have web hosting, which I think is enough for the time being. With every new daemon and service comes new security considerations, and when "smolnet" daemons tend to be less actively maintained/watched than anything else hosted here, it's hard to justify running them when nobody's going to be using them anyways.
- Ntfy
- Pretty much entirely unused when it was online, and I want to avoid running web apps unless there's good reason to do so.
tl;dr
As of now, Midgard is back in business. The service roster has changed and what goes on inside has gone through a total overhaul, but the core is still the same. We're still running free sites for people that can't self host, we're still darknet-only (other than promo sites like this one getting proxied), we're still anti-web bloat, we're still anti-Big Tech, we're still anti-GenAI, and above all else, we are still pro-human web and pro-decentralization. Midgard is here to stay, even through rough patches like the one we just came out of.
Information should be free, Kopimi.
